End of the School Year

On May 17 of 2013, a group of public school teachers from the south of Spain, known as the interinos, entered a public high school in Sevilla, with the intention of remaining there for an indefinite amount of time. They were protesting against the decision of the Junta de Andalucia (government of the region) to fire 4,502 public school teachers. They chose a high school that was scheduled to be shut down in the near future. This was the last action after months of intense protests with little results. During the weeks they remained inside the high school premises, they had positive and negative interactions with both the workers of the school, and neighborhood families.

Miguel Macias had followed previous protests of the interinos group and had become familiar with some of the members of the group. These interviews were conducted on May 30, 2013. On that same day the interinos organized a symbolic wedding for two of their members, who were getting married formally soon after. The event became an emotional occasion and a chance to remember experiences they had shared. In this video, four interinos reflect on their experiences, their expectations, the state of the country and the future, as we become witnesses of an intimate event.
